Crazy music lover who keeps beating imaginary beats along with the song, all pretending to be the actual drummer of the track? Or fond of hitting it right but confused how to go about doing that? Then you definitely are one of those aspiring drummers and always, it is advisable to start from the very basics. Ok then, so let us start then.
Crucial initials
Before starting to actually play the drums, it is essential to gain knowledge about the types of drums, the various components included in it, functioning of each one of them, all types of sticks, different tunings and it’s uses and so on.
There are different types of drums in every set, bass drum, snare and cymbals. Bass drums are usually one with the ‘big surface’ or technically ground, which makes a low booming sound with hit by the mallet ( it is the weight at the end of the shaft attached to a foot-pedal controlled by the drummer’s right foot). Many drummers these days use two mallets, controlled by both the feet for the ‘double-bass’ effect. Next comes the snare drum. It is usually located to the left of the drummer and the non-dominant stick is usually used for this. Crisp click followed by a resonating sound is what the snare is known and used for. A cymbal varies in type, shape and sound and is to be used specifically. It is a circular metallic object which resonates on being struck. There are different types of drum sticks available in the market and each has it’s own use. 5A is advisable for beginners. Start with holding the drum sticks with using your thumb and index finger and folding the rest around the stick (ie. Matched grip). There is something known as the ‘traditional grip too which involves more complex handling of the sticks using the middle finger to create a different sound.
Consult the people, who already are good at playing, they might guide you the right way – to play well as well as to buy. A metronome is a good idea, if not get a click track to practice well.
